Lawrence and jazz pianist/composer Jason Moran have collaborated on a music video for NPR’s Field Recordings series, shot in the crypt underneath the Church of the Intercession in Harlem. They chose to re-arrange the spiritual “There’s a Man Going ‘Round Taking Names,” using the old music to tell a troubling new story of violence and the Black Lives Matter movement that has arisen in recent years.

Says Lawrence of the video: “This project has been extremely sobering for me. The gravity of the subject matter weighed heavily on both Jason and I, to the point that we wanted to use our music to express what many people are feeling these days: a growing frustration with the senseless killing of so many. Jason's playing masterfully evokes an atmosphere of unrest and tension, allowing me to use the words to accent the pain and despair of the text. I hope this will ultimately bring further awareness to something we feel has to change...”
